(Continued) The course comprises of 3 main elements:
Academics. While there is considerable emphasis on physical work the academic needs of students are not over-looked and are addressed through NOCN qualifications. Award in Progression Entry 3, Award in Progression level 1 and Certficate in Progression Level 1 Step-up.
As well as advice and instruction on independent living, healthy Lifestyles and nutrition, Health and safety and other life Skills, such as Interview skills and presentation skills incorporated to produce a well rounded confident young person
Physical Training. Consists of Developing and building on the individual’s physical fitness and stamina, by incorporating a structured programme of fitness, agility and cardiovascular routines in the 13 week training plan. Teaching and encouraging non- swimmers, in order to bring them up to a confidant standard and feel secure in the water and building on the ability of weak swimmers. Also improving swimming techniques in structured training sessions for the more able swimmer to improve their all round ability.
Adventure Training / Outdoor activities. – Developing teamwork, self confidence and helping individual confront and conquer everyday fears of things such as water, heights etc is an integral part of the course whilst on the programme trainees have the opportunity to gain qualification and certifications in many different skills, such as map reading and navigation, First Aid, life saving and distance swimming.
Activities include Windsurfing, community work, Scuba diving (subject to availability and season) high ropes, and Ice Skating, based on team building skills, Mounting boarding and a 36hrs over night stay with the Armed forces. There are also opportunities to be involved in look at life courses abroad with the army and work experience with the Marines.
The course is run at the main at 2 locations, Impact premises based in Ashford and Sir John Moore barracks in Folkestone. The Army kindly provide the facilities at the barracks, as they see the course as valuable in helping young people of this age group prepare for what is a vast cultural change in the transition from civilian to military life. At the moment we have a high pass rate of young people successfully entering the Armed / uniformed services, further education and sports & leisure as well as producing confident well rounded young people for the business, retail or construction trades.
Young people on the course can apply for assisted travel, they are also provided with protective clothing and safety equipment as required for any of the activities carried out.
The course is run 3 times a year and has been running for approximately 9 years with each course expanding on the success of the previous.
Who can join? You must have left school be aged 16-18, 19 in some circumstances and living in the Kent area.
Young people can apply to come onto the Impact course as self funding students, if they live out of the Kent area or do not fall into the above age criteria this also applies to educational establishments who wish to apply for places on behalf of their own students not in the appropriate entry criteria.
